Where to find Water
Water is a critical resource because it changes the state of other materials. The checked official Water page lists surface lakes, underground deposits, melting Ice, rain created by Steam, and Lumlings as sources. These sources do not all behave the same way, so treat the source you can inspect and protect as part of the factory layout rather than as an infinite assumption.
Surface lakes are easy to see when planning a first route, but an open pool can be affected by the documented evaporation behavior. Underground deposits and melted Ice can be useful when the terrain around a first base changes. Steam rain and Lumlings are also listed sources, yet their exact availability in each current progression state is to be confirmed from the active build.
Water creates Wet Sand and Wet Seeds
When Water touches Sand it creates Wet Sand. When it touches Seed it creates Wet Seed. Those two state changes connect directly to the Shaker and Planter Box production paths, which is why a water route is often the hidden dependency behind an early Gold chain.

The important detail is the matter state. A dry Sand input will not substitute for Wet Sand at a Shaker, and a dry Seed will not substitute for Wet Seed at a Planter Box. If a machine appears idle, inspect the material itself before adding more water or rebuilding the machine.
Build inspectable pump and pipe routes
Pumps, Pipes, and Liquid Vents form the core liquid logistics family described in the Beginner's Guide. Put the pump close enough to the source to make the first connection easy to inspect, then run the pipe along an edge of the solid factory. Keep a visible gap near the conversion point so you can see whether the water reaches the Sand or Seed that needs it.
Avoid hiding a pipe behind a dense Conveyor Belt grid. The official page notes that Water flow can be blocked by Blocks, Conveyor Belts, Kinetic Presses, and Flux Emanators. A route that works in an empty test area can therefore stop after the factory grows around it. Plan a bypass or a manual access tile before filling every square.
Filters can interact with liquids, so a mixed route needs an intentional split. Do not rely on water settling into whichever opening happens to be lower. Give each branch a destination and enough empty space to identify a blocked segment.
Connect Water to the Shaker
Wet Sand is the input for the Shaker's early Gold and Residue path. A practical arrangement keeps the water-to-sand conversion immediately upstream of the Shaker, with a clear diagonal or downhill space for Residue to leave. The exact shape depends on terrain, but the principle is stable: convert only as much material as the output lane can accept.
If Wet Sand accumulates before the Shaker, check the Shaker input side and its output side separately. A full Residue lane can make an apparently healthy water system look broken. Pause the water feed, clear the production output, and then resume the conversion at a lower rate.
Connect Water to the Planter Box
Wet Seed feeds the Planter Box, which produces Flowers. Keep the wetting point close enough to the box that dry Seed cannot mix back into the input lane. The Flower output also needs its own buffer, especially if the next Amethelis step is not ready.

Treat open-water behavior as Early Access-sensitive
The official Water page documents evaporation when water does not settle into a depression within the stated timing. Because that timing and the interaction with terrain can change, do not treat an uncovered pool as a guaranteed permanent reservoir. The exact current timing is to be confirmed after updates.
Likewise, the list of blockers is more useful than an assumed flow rate. If water stops, inspect terrain, belts, Kinetic Presses, Flux Emanators, and Filters around the route. Take a screenshot before changing several systems at once so you can tell which edit restored the flow.
Common Water mistakes
- Building a long pipe route before checking whether the source is stable.
- Letting solid logistics cross the fluid path and hiding a blockage.
- Sending Water toward Sand without a clear Shaker route.
- Feeding a Planter Box with dry Seed instead of Wet Seed.
- Scaling the water source while a downstream output is already full.
Water is easiest to manage when the source, conversion, machine, and output can be read in one direction. Keep temporary pools labeled, reserve a second route where terrain permits, and recheck the official page after an Early Access patch changes fluid behavior.
